With plans and aspirations of becoming a collegiate strength and conditioning coach, Merissa graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology, wrapped up an internship with the Divison I RIT Women’s Hockey team and headed West. After having tough luck with CrossFit “back home”, Merissa was determined to give it another go while interning in the Athletics Department at Santa Clara University as a Strength and Conditioning Coach. She found Sundown Crossfit and now you’re starting to put some pieces together… there she got hooked.

If Merissa wasn’t interning, working or training at Sundown, she was sleeping because this season of life saw Merissa find a new motivation to be the greatest CrossFit athlete she could be. This determination was so fierce that once her SCU internship ended she feverishly found a position in the Athletics Department at Stanford University. This move kept her in the area, allowing her to chase her career dreams, CrossFit dreams and continue to learn under Coach Todd’s tutelage.

Another opportunity presented itself a few months later when Merissa got the opportunity to open a lululemon location near Stanford and begin her coaching journey at Sundown, while maintaining her training. Quickly, she realized that coaching collegiate athletes was far different than coaching CrossFit athletes and novice exercisers. Athletes coming into the CrossFit gym were seeking betterment and health and the athletes at the collegiate facilities were coming in because they were required to workout by coaches.

Merissa comes to us with a very competitive basketball background and finds her competitive juices get fired up training here at Currahee. She has rediscovered the feeling of being an athlete in post-collegiate life. She credits the programming and coaching, but mostly, Merissa loves the Currahee team and training with people that push her inside and outside of the gym.

Merissa is entering her second year of training with the same goal that she had when she began competing in CrossFit: qualifying for Regionals. Through her coaching experience and her injury history (3 ACL reconstructions), she has realized that her dream job in life is actually in physical therapy. She is preparing for application to physical therapy school and is looking forward to more opportunities to coach athletes and continually grown in her ability to analyze human movement.
